June 4, 2008 2 comments

The Godzilla statue is hidden deep inside the heart of Ginza, hard to find. Espezially when you keep looking up at the sky for a cosmic edition…

A bit more eye catching though, the life size blue whale located outside the national science museum..

Sumida River fireworks festival, the epitome of excellence

Last Saturday of July, Tokyo sky turn into a sparkling showdown between two rivaling firework companies.

Starting with just a slight `puff ´at sunset…

Then later, darkness and people conquer the streets…the unbelievably clean streets. No need for sofas..

Rooftops, for photo ops…

Eating off the floor is for people with low standards cornering cleanness. Eating off the road on the other hand…broom and shovel, just wont cut it!

The brave & proud street sweepers must be exhausted…that’s for sure.

The enigmatic japanese smile

Mrs. Beckham would not stand a chance.

In Japan, poute is out!

smile

A strange thing though; the japanese smile is not nesseserally a symbol of happiness or acceptance as in western culture. The j-smile can imply everything from sadness, embarrassment, confusion or that they “dont know”.

The j-smile is a powerfull act in the silent culture of japan, where avoiding conflict and confrontations is essential. Practice makes perfect…

They even have developed a camera with smile recognition software, which snaps on the cue of a smile.

That camera  would probably not work with me and my gloomy scandinavian partners in karaokecrime, just not that chippy…ha!

Tokyo’s metrosexual street vendors

Even though they are a minority…they stil manage to claim the space they deserve in the Mis-En-Scene of Tokyo.

From Ueno station down along the Yamnote line towards Akihabara, you find the location of vendor heaven. Ameyoko (アメ横)  a bazaar Asian style, noisy, crowded and cheap!

アメ横 - vendor

But since this is japan, there is some level of class and conduct to it.  Thank god…

Metrosexsual vendors even mange to infiltrate the upmarket shopping district of Ginza. His style and preformance, flawless…and those nicely trimmed bi- and triseps takes him over the edge of perfection.

In other parts of Tokyo such as Asakusa, you will encounter the more traditional low-key breed of vendors. Selling traditional things….irasshaimase!

Still a tuch of metrosexualism, love the gladiator sandals…

The eco solution… & feng shui of bicycles!

January 27, 2008 1 comment

Bicycling in Tokyo is a somewhat scary experience. Even parking your bike can be quite a challenge. The does and dont`s  are not something a westerner can figure out just by applying usual feeble western logic.

You can NOT under any circumstance just leave and lock the bike by the sidewalk (it would probably interfere with the desired feng shui) and look messy!

And  when riding your bike down the sidewalk, It just don`t occur to the pedestrians that a bicycle might HIT an HARM them, or maybe they just did not care. The responsibility is all on you, to steer away from all the people with an subconscious death wish…

BTW: I did not hit & hurt anyone, but unfortunately committed one quite serious parking-error….shame on me!

Tranquillity, beyond all reason….

Going for a walk, towards of the rising Tokyo sun, a beautiful blessing! Down the tranquil, silent, clean, trustable and safe streets of Tokyo. A city that treats & respects you like the highly sensitive person you are…
